Amazing. I remember when this contest was started. It was simple. You had 6 months to build a profitable business and use Shopify. I might have entered had I had a product at the time. In retrospect, I don't think I was then capable of competing on the level of the guys at Dodocase. Truly amazing. Read more here

Good job and congratulations to Dodocase

It turns out the planes were actually F15s. Meaning there effective top speed is mach 2.5. Which means they could probably cut the time on the trip down to 5.5 min or thereabouts. Does this sound like a fun ride to anyone else?

Continuing on the Sonic Booms

Ok, so, I wrote the last post before I had the info that the planes were scrambled from the 142nd Air National Guard in Portland, Oregon.

So, lets rework the math. That equates to appx 173 (portland to seattle by google maps- I know, they woudln't use roads, but we're just going for a ballpark figure) miles traveled and assuming mach 1, that's about 13.5 min. with the minimum time assuming (mach 1.8) that would be approximately 8.75 min.

So we can reasonably figure the trip took somewhere between 8.75 minutes and 13.5 minutes. I am, of course simplifying this as we don't know how long it took for them to get airborne or if they were already on patrol.

Sonic booms heard in Seattle, Tacoma, Kent and other municipalities around the Puget Sound region

As reported by King 5 news today:

Posted on August 17, 2010 at 2:23 PM

SEATTLE – The FAA says explosions heard throughout the Puget Sound area are sonic booms from military aircraft in the area.

KING 5 News was flooded with calls and e-mails from people who heard and felt the explosions. Many people reported that their homes shook.

Emergency agencies across Western Washington were flooded with calls from people who heard and felt a double boom about 1:50 p.m.

The FAA says the air space closed because of Pres. Barack Obama's visit was breached, and two F18 jets were scrambled in response.

Now, figuring that McChord AFB is about 25 miles from the area the president was in, I couldn't help but do the math. IF the planes were only doing the speed of sound, their total trip time would have been somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 minutes. This is assuming they weren't already in the area on patrol and also assuming they were travelling at their rated top speed of mach 1.7

Talk about a response time.
